A Secret Rage is the second novel by American author, Charlaine Harris. High profile model, Nickie Callahan moves from New York City to small-town Tennessee when her popularity begins to wane. She decides to live with her twice-divorced good friend Mimi Houston in Knolls and complete her college education at Houston College, aiming to become a writer. But it seems that Knolls is no safer than New York, as first a young student and then a college professor are raped. Everyone is on high alert, and yet Nickie herself falls victim to the rapist. When the initial shock abates, Nickie’s rage propels her to join forces with a fellow victim to track down their rapist. This early Harris offering deals with the crime of rape in an insightful manner, giving the reader an excellent mystery with plenty of potential suspects, red herrings, interesting characters, some black humour and a nail-biting climax. Harris’s personal experience and her extensive research are apparent on each page of this highly readable novel.
