Description: Product Description
Late one night, exploring her father's library, a young woman finds an ancient book and a cache of yellowing letters addressed ominously to 'My dear and unfortunate successor'. Her discovery plunges her into a world she never dreamed of - a labyrinth where the secrets of her father's past and her mother's mysterious fate connect to an evil hidden in the depths of history. In those few quiet moments, she unwittingly assumes a quest she will discover is her birthright - a hunt for the truth about Vlad the Impaler, the medieval ruler whose barbarous reign formed the basis of the Dracula myth., Deciphering obscure signs and hidden texts, reading codes worked into the fabric of medieval monastic traditions, and evading terrifying adversaries, one woman comes ever closer to the secret of her own past and a confrontation with the very definition of evil. Elizabeth Kostova's debut novel is an adventure of monumental proportions - a captivating tale that blends fact and fantasy, history and the present with an assurance that is almost unbearably suspenseful - and utterly unforgettable.
Reviews: Leece (United Kingdom) (2007/02/13):
A good intertwined tale about vampire hunting. Took quite a while to get into it, but once into it you just had to read the rest to find out what happened.

Lyn (Ireland) (2007/03/30):
Loved this book. Yes, took a bit of getting into but I sailed through it. A kind of "Da Vinci Code" for vampire hunters.

gingerpixel (Ireland) (2007/07/24):
One of my favourite books of the last year. I couldn't put it down.

Tara (USA: CT) (2007/10/23):
One of my favorite books of last year, too. This was the first book in a long time that actually scared me when reading it at night......it seemed like Dracula could be around any corner! I look forward to Kostova's next book, I can't wait to see what she does next.

Crystal (Canada) (2008/04/17):
Overall, it was awesome read. I didn't really have a problem getting into it, but I did find the last bit a little boring.

Lothlorien (USA: CA) (2008/07/08):
Really enjoyed it. After reading "The Fledgling," I was highly discouraged in vampire novels, until I picked up this one.

Wendy Bettencourt (USA: TX) (2009/02/01):
One of my favorite books of the past several years. I'm considered a book snob by friends and family, and this book accomplishes something so few do these days: it weaves intelligent, well-written prose with a well-paced story, so it transcends a few genres and pleases so many different readers! I literally stayed up all night reading this novel! If you have any tangent interest in high-minded vampire lore, historical fiction, or literary fiction, this is a must-read. It is a rather hefty book, but you'll be too engrossed to mind.

Craig (United Kingdom) (2011/09/17):
A good story, but told in a very meandering style that meant a lot of superfluous detail and for that reason it didn't always hold my attention.
